“A Body to Live In” is a captivating documentary about the life and work of Fakir Musafar (1930-2018) -photographer, performer and icon of the body modification and queer scenes. This film sheds light on the beginnings of physical borderline experiences, queer subculture, and spiritual self-exploration – from the 1940s to the AIDS crisis. With rare archival footage and the voices of important contemporaries such as Annie Sprinkle and Ron Athey, a multi-layered dialog emerges about art, identity, the responsibility surrounding cultural appropriation and the freedom to live in and in balance with one’s own body.
