Venus in Nykes

In “Venus in Nykes”, a young gay man tells his (drag) therapist of his fetishes, from the love of his own sweat to sneaker sniffing, as his therapist becomes more and more entranced with the man’s pride in his perversity, in an homage to gay male sexuality as a subversive act. Interspersed with explicit scenes of the protagonist having sex and clips of the works of underground gay icons of the 20th century such as Kenneth Anger and Derek Jarman, all with a heavily electro soundtrack, the therapy session takes a turn for the philosophical leaving everyone turned on – physically and mentally.

What do “Seinfeld” and a psychedelic pilgrimage across the US have to do with one another? Trans poet Patty Gone uses both to discover profound truths about herself in her hippy-experimental film essay.
